De coriolus is een paddenstoel die in de volksmond elfenbankje wordt genoemd en groeit ook in de Nederlandse bossen maar wordt niet beschouwd als eetbaar. In de Chinese en Japanse geneeskunde wordt de coriolus al vele duizenden jaren gebruikt als immuunsysteem versterker, heden ten dage is het de meest voorgeschreven paddenstoel met medicinale eigenschappen.

In de jaren '70 heeft de Kureha Chemical Industry Comapny uit Japan de marketing rechten van extracten die zijn haalden uit de coriolus gelicenseerd aan het farmaceutische bedrijf Sankyo Pharmaceutical Company. Het meest bekende product, Krestin genaamd, wordt als geneesmiddel ingezet als niet specifieke immunomodulator bij bepaalde vormen van kanker. De omzet van dit middel bedraagt circa 600 miljoen US dollar op jaarbasis.

Deze paddenstoel kent diverse stoffen met medicinale werking waaronder polysacchariden K (ook wel PSK genoemd)(ref: 1,2,3,6,12,13,24,25 en 27 t/m 32). Er is op dit moment veel wetenschappelijk onderzoek gaande naar de anti kanker eigenschappen van paddenstoelen waaronder dit elfenbankje. Naast deze eigenschappen kent de paddenstoel, net als vele andere, antibacteriële, antivirale en immuunsysteem versterkende effecten. Wel bestaat er kwaliteitsverschil in de extracten (VPS, PSK, PSP), voorschrijven bij bepaalde ziektebeelden moet gebeuren door een deskundige.

Bijwerkingen van het gebruik van coriolus zijn zeldzaam, enige bekende zijn: zwarte ontlasting en donkerkleurende vingernagels.
