Actieve componenten: polysacchariden (beta 1.3 en 1.6 glucaan), vitamines (vitamine B1, B2, b5, B6, B7, B11 foliumzuur, C, D2, K), bioflavonoïden, mineralen (selenium, zink, borium, jodium), amino zuren, proteïnes, onverzadigde vetzuren (linoleen zuur), vezels, lovastatine 

De oesterzwam heft zijn Nederlandse naam te danken aan de vorm en het uiterlijk welke gelijkenis vertoont met een oester. Ze groeien in Europa ook in het wild maar de oesterzwammen die in de supermarkt te koop zijn onder condities gekweekt. In de traditionele geneeskunde in Azië wordt de paddenstoel al eeuwenlang gebruikt om het cholesterol niveau te beïnvloeden. Deze toepassing is niet zo vreemd aangezien er lovastatine in de oesterzwam als stof wordt aangetroffen, in de reguliere geneeskunde is dit een stof die valt in de statines geneesmiddelgroep en die ingezet wordt om het cholesterol niveau in patiënten naar beneden te krijgen.
